Sunday, March 15, 2009 ![]() I enjoy solving crossword puzzles, though the ones I've solved are those that revolves around entertainment news and movies. So when I chanced upon this documentary, 'Wordplay',I knew I have to rent it immediately.Wordplay is a documentary about crossword puzzles. Apparently in the US, New York Times crossword puzzle is the most popular puzzle that everyone looks forward to everyday. There are many interesting trivia I've taken home with me after watching this movie. 1.Like Sudoku, crossword puzzles have many levels of difficulty, with Monday being the easiest(coz it's the start of the week) and Friday,Saturday and Sunday being the hardest. 2.These puzzles cannot contain any disgusting words like urine or rectum, bcoz on Sundays,Americans will solve the puzzle on their breakfast table and such words will make them feel uncomfortable. 3.Crossword puzzles contain an odd nos of squares. There are a total of 19 blackened squares. 4.There is an annual American Crosswords Tournament where puzzlers from all around America will gather at Stamford to compete against each other. 5.Bill Clinton plays crossword puzzles too! 6.There are different themes for each crossword puzzle. The puzzle constructor created one based on 7 days of the week.So words like suntan, wedding are used. I think it's nice to find out that crossword puzzles is a national pastime in US and that it hasn't succumb to the evils of technology, you know,PSP,WII and all those electronic games. Hopefully this fever for crosswords will never die down! Check it out! |
