Tuesday, January 23, 2007 Dear students, I notice that today's class was the most restless lecture I have ever witnessed in a long, long time. It was a great distraction to me. However, more importantly, it may be a distraction to some fellow students, especially those who may be less capable than you. I understand that some of you may already know the material, that the first few lectures cover fairly basic stuff, or some of you may have no interest in accounting but have to take it. Whatever it is, I would like to request that you observe silence when lecture is in progress. If you have doubts about something, you can put up your hand for clarification or wait until the interval or the end of class to seek clarification. I have been fortunate to meet many successful business leaders in my work outside, and a common characteristic is that have good EQ and are good listeners. They may not always agree with you, but they will not interrupt you while you are making your point. I give 8-10 speeches in a year to directors, senior executives, industry professionals and regulators - usually with hundreds in a hall, not unlike a lecture. Without exception, there is absolute silence. Admittedly, those speeches cover more interesting stuff than debits and credits, but I'm sure some of them would also already know what I am saying. My point is that basic respect for others is a hallmark of a successful leader, and I am sure you all hope to be one someday. As the course progresses to more specialised topics, I will be depart more from the textbook, drawing examples from real life. From this point of view, it is therefore also important that you pay attention to what I say, as you may not find what I say in the textbook or other sources. Thank you for your understanding. Regards, A/P Mak Yuen Teen This was the small little note the FNA prof wrote to all of us. It's dripping with sarcasm and arrogance. Yes yes,we know you're this renowned prof who gives speeches to like the world's most impt people. Without your noble speeches, the earth would stop spinning, the flowers would not blossom, the birds would cease to fly. But PLEASE,your lectures are boring. I think it's kinda obvious when the whole lecture hall is filled with chatter. And it doesn't help that you keep droning on and on and on and on.... Like a music player that refuses to stop. |
